Metamorphosis “Makeover” Fall Retreat teaching outline 2008

(6th grade Meta teaching will be a condensed version by Taylor Ogden Thomas)

Friday night
7th/8th-Taylor teaching
High School-Dave teaching
Scripture: Acts 5:22-42
Media: model makeover video, Mr.& Mrs. Potato Head story part four (The runway).
Regardless of the world’s expectations and influences over us, we are called to obey a larger calling in Jesus Christ. This story of the apostles not giving into the world, but living boldly for Jesus Christ teaches us to release the world’s fear and grasp over our insecurities. We hope for students to recognize God’s power in Gamaliel’s words found in verses 35-39 when he says “Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”

Saturday morning
7th/8th & High School-Jason teaching
Scripture: 1 Peter 1:18-19; Acts 9
Media: Potato story part three (The Makeover)
Through the story of Paul’s “makeover” on the road to Damascus we will teach the students to recognize God’s transforming grace. I peter reminds us that we are not shaped by the riches of this world, but the sacrificial act from Jesus Christ on the cross.

Saturday afternoon
7th/8th & High School-Jason teaching
Scripture: Hebrews 5:11-6:3
Media: Potato story part two (The Decision)
This passage in Hebrews reminds us of the need to grow in maturity through Christ. We may often slip into an immature faith and we need to get “back to the basics” of how faithful God is. We will remind the students who they are in God when desperation creeps in, when joy escapes, or when life gets really hard, and “self-help” just doesn’t have the power.

Saturday night
7th/8th & High School-Jason teaching
Scripture: 1 Cor 3:18-23
Media: Potato story part one (The Roots)
This scripture teaches us about the “upside down” kingdom that is God’s. A kingdom that says be a fool for God and you will be wise. We will focus on the Resurrection of Jesus and being created for specific purpose and relationship with God. We will challenge students to recognize they are the Church and God is calling a generation forward to build His Kingdom!

Sunday morning
7th/8th-Taylor teaching
High School-Dave teaching
Scripture: Luke 2:39-52
Visual: individual potato
This is the story of Jesus becoming “lost” in the temple. Was He lost though, or was He truly where He needed to be? When his parents found him they realized his call and place when He said “Where else would I be except in my Father’s house?” We hope to challenge students to not lose sight of Jesus in the world, but to seek him daily through devotion, and weekly through worship, service, and study.
